  History...

Originally built in 1951 as Capilano Stadium, it was renamed Nat Bailey Stadium in 1978 to honour the work of Vancouver restauranteur Nat Bailey and his tireless effort to promote baseball in Vancouver. Nat Bailey Stadium was originally the home of the legendary Vancouver Capilanos of the Western International League. It's has served as home to the Vancouver Mounties of the Pacific Coast League, the Vancouver Canadians of the Pacific Coast League, and currently the Vancouver Canadians of the Northwest League. The ballpark is also the home of the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. The Nat has seen a few changes over the years mainly to accommodate capacity but one thing that has never changed is the incredibly scenic location of the ballpark. Nat Bailey Stadium benefits from being situated on the edge of Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver, surrounded by forest and mountains.

  Recent History...

The advent of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver has created opportunities for expansion and construction of many venues for the games throughout the city. Many of these venues will remain long after 2010 for the citizens of Vancouver to use and enjoy. The Hillcrest/Nat Bailey Stadium Park will be constructed to host the men’s and women’s curling competitions as well as the Paralympic wheelchair curling and will be converted into a multi-use community legacy facility after the games. The park, scheduled for completion in the fall of 2008 will seat 6000 people during the Olympic events, one of the largest in the games history. The post games facility will be transformed into a multi-purpose recreation centre that will include an ice hockey rink, gymnasium, library, and curling ice. A new aquatic centre will also be constructed at the site with both lap and leisure facilities. There will be some minor adjustments to Nat Bailey Stadium during the construction phase, but the schedule at the Nat will not be disrupted.

Celebrate 100 years of Baseball in Vancouver! The History of Baseball in Vancouver is a documentary series, of how a misplaced sport united a rainy Pacific North West community through a century of heart aches and home runs. To commemorate this historic milestone, Infinite Potential Productions will be filming throughout the summer of 2007 – compiling the history of professional baseball in Vancouver. Through personal stories – from former and current team members and staff, Major League Baseball alumni, community leaders, and of course, the fans - this project will re-create, and recount the story of how baseball survived through the decades, and succeeded in becoming a thread that linked generations of diverse families.
